Colds and Ear Infections
Ear Infections: Bacterial
Young Living essential oil blends are very effective for winter “bugs”. Melrose is an excellent blend to have available. Let’s take a look at the EFFECTIVE natural remedies for EAR ACHES and an article from Journal of Infectious Diseases.
Journal of Infectious Diseases: Essential oils may cure ear infections
Last Updated: 2005-06-10 15:28:35 -0400 (Reuters Health)
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Applying certain essential oils to the (outside) ear canal appears to be an effective treatment for ear infections, findings from an animal study suggest.
"If toxicity studies confirm the safety of (anti-bacterial) essential oil components for use in the ear, then a significant advance can be made" in the treatment of ear infections, the investigators conclude in the Journal of Infectious Diseases.
The vapors that are released by essential oils, such as oil of basil, have been shown to have rapid bacteria-killing effects. Topical therapy for ear infections is usually not recommended because most drugs are in a liquid form that cannot penetrate the eardrum to reach the infected middle ear. However, the vapors from essential oils may be able to diffuse through the eardrum and destroy the microbes present.
To investigate, Dr. Karl G. Kristinsson, from Landspitali University Hospital in Reykjavik, Iceland, and colleagues tested oil of basil, various essential oil components, and inactive "placebo" on rats with experimental ear infections.
Treatment with the oils cured up to 81 percent of the animals. With placebo, by contrast, cure rates did not exceed 6 percent.
The team notes that based on their properties, essential oils may be able to destroy a variety of bacteria that can cause ear infections. They also point out that essential oils are generally considered to be safe.

1. I have used wintergreen or Melrose several times for earaches with excellent results. I swim for exercise in the summer and I sometimes get water deep in the ear when turning my head from side to side. It can be painful, so at the first sign of an infection, I use either oil and the pain is gone overnight.. Connie
2. I came back from Louisville and was on a regional jet. I had viral bronchitis for over a month and this really made the pressure in my ears build up when the airplane stated to descend. I have never experience pain that bad from flying.
My ears began to just hurt so bad and they continued until the next day. I just started learning about the oils, so I got out my desk reference and it said to use Melrose, which I had. I put Thieves & Melrose one drop on a cotton ball and put it in my ear. It felt better the next morning so I went to church. When I came home it began hurting again, so I did the same thing and it has not hurt me since that time. so I was thankful that I had it on hand and it worked.

3. My 6 month old is constantly being oiled and this being my third child I chose to raise her without the harsh chemicals. Even so... she caught a "bug" one week at church. Not surprising since most everyone is coughing with some illness. I always need to remember to apply Thieves right before going to church for this reason... to keep illness away.
Aimee, my baby, started sniffling with runny nose by the middle of the week. I immediately grabbed both Thieves and Immupower--a drop of each diluted applied to the top toes of the feet. By Friday she went into a fever... registered at 102... kept pulling at her ear.
Now typically I would get worried at this point. I remember my 2nd child had a similar problem. Rushed her to the emergency room. So this time... choosing to go about this the natural way first... and knowing full well that we have God's healing oils in our arsenal... I examined the EODR for recommendations. I decided to try the Young Living blend... Melrose. I applied a drop of Melrose to 3 drops of V-6 New Formula Mixing oil and rubbed with my pinky inside Aimee's ear.. all around the tip and crevices reaching as far as I could. She was in quite great pain... so had to do this gently as I could. Then I took another drop of Melrose neet and rubbed it behind the ear from the bone down around behind it .
This was Saturday. By morning Sunday... her fever had broken and her ear infection WAS GONE!!! I could touch both her ears and she did not pull away as she had done before. AMAZING!!! Sunday we went to church and she was back to her normal cheerful self.
Point is... I find a solution to any basic “kid” problem by consulting the EODR. (Essential Oils Desk Reference)
Just think... 2 drops of Melrose!! About 7 cents a drop. Compare that to $6 for children's Tylenol or $60 for a visit to the doctor to have him/her prescribe a bottle of $6-7 children's Tylenol.

4. My 2 year old grandson had gotten a nasty cold from daycare kids. We got the cough and fever under control with Thieves and diffusing Purification in the vaporizer but he woke up from his nap one afternoon pulling on his ears and saying "ear ouch". The whining began and his mother was beside herself. Oils to the rescue. We decided to take a tablespoon of warm olive oil and 5 drops of Melrose, mix it together and place about 5 drops right in outside each ear canal and stuff it with a small cotton ball. Of course he didn't leave the cotton in very long but the oil did its job. The next morn. no more complaining about ear ouch and it was truly amazing what came out of his little ear over night and the next day. As well as clearing up the ear ache, it cleaned out all of the wax build up and his little ears have been clean as a whistle since and he has been a happy little boy (that is, as much as 2 year olds are!). Five drops of Melrose, or a Dr visit and a week of antibiotics... what a wonderful alternative!!!!!

5. I have used Purification, Melrose and Believe for ear infections and it just seems to clear it up over night for my grandchildren.
I just use one at a time. That works really fast to take the pain away also. Nancy S.

COLDS: Viral. There are many essential oils that have strong antimicrobial properties. Diffusing them is effective to prevent the spread of airborne bacteria and viruses. These are very effective as preventative aids in avoiding colds as well as in helping the body defenses fight colds, once an infection has started.
COLD Blend bath recipe:
2 drops Eucalyptus radiata
6 drops frankincense
6 drops spruce
15 drops ravensara
8 drops wintergreen.
Stir above essential oils into ½ cup Epsom salt or baking soda and add mixture to hot bath water while filling the tub. (Raven can substitute for Eucalyptus and ravensara)
